DAS in 2022: a bright future in 2022 and beyond
A new year is finally here, and with it comes new challenges, opportunities, trends, and tech.
As we are well underway into the 2020s, a bright light is shone on connectivity and accessibility to the Internet, significantly as the state of work and the global workforce shift into realities and norms.
This increased attention and emphasis on connectivity translates into great news for distributed antenna systems (DAS), seeing that entire cities and countries are restructuring their infrastructure to welcome a more digitally oriented world.
Accordingly, the industry is on course to increase throughout 2022 and beyond, reaching new heights that will bolster the technological capabilities of what distributed antenna systems can achieve and deliver to the market.
According to a February study by ResearchAndMarkets, the DAS market is estimated to grow from $8.7 billion in 2021 to $12.7 billion by 2027, with a CAGR hike of 6.5 percent during the forecast period.
With that in mind, the report highlighted that the services segment of the DAS industry would reach the largest share in the next five years, mainly as the sector divides itself into two main pillars: components and services.
“The services segment (pre-sales services, installation services, and post-sales services) is projected to hold the largest market share than components segment owing to the high capital expenditure in installation and maintenance of DAS in both, outdoor and indoor environment,” the report noted.
Based on coverage, the market for indoor DAS is on its way to becoming the next heavyweight within the industry, mainly attributed to the increased demand for continuous and prolonged connectivity for a plethora of uses such as gaming, remote working, and learning.
In a recent Cisco survey, almost 80 percent of the data consumed by people and businesses were indoors, thus, further elaborating the importance and need for in-building DAS network installation amplifying cell reception, VoIP, and data services to those on the network.
From a geographical standpoint, North America is expected to have the lion’s share of the DAS market over five years, especially as the continent boasts high levels of 4G and 5G smartphone penetration. This has “established it as one of the most advanced mobile-dense regions in the world.”
This statement was echoed by Swedish telecoms vendor Ericsson via its 2019 Mobility Report, which registered North America to have the highest use of smartphones.
“The traffic per smartphone is expected to reach 45GB by the end of 2025, other factors that are worth mentioning is also the increased number of Internet subscribers, expanding mobile data traffic, and growing emphasis of government officials to enhance telecommunications infrastructure to meet the users’ demand for seamless connectivity are expected to drive the growth of the DAS market in the region,” the report said.
The figures shown in the reports mentioned above points toward a bright future for the industry, with investments in DAS growing at an exponential rate.
