First responder communication in emergency situations and the ERRCS System

When simplified, both Emergency Responder Radio Communication Systems, or ERRCS, and a Distributed Antenna System, or DAS, serve the same purpose of amplifying telecommunications signals.

The similarities end there, given that an ERRCS requirement is typically mandated by local and federal authorities for most large-scale commercial, industrial, and residential structures, essentially serving as an amplifier. In contrast, DAS generally serves a more convenient purpose for the end-user.

Therefore, an ERRCS setup allows specific radio signals to penetrate where otherwise would not be possible due to physical barriers. These barriers are often building materials, their density, the disposition of walls, and weak signal strength.

ERRCS are generally set by local jurisdictions, which are generally mandated by the local fire marshall or building inspectors. The recommendations and requirements are issued based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s code 72 and International Fire Code (IFC), section 510, as a core component of public safety compliance.

The ERRCS requirements will vary throughout the different needs required but will serve the same overall purpose of ensuring a stable and area-wide radio coverage.

These requirements are pivotal given the rise in public concern over public emergencies, natural disasters, man-made disasters, terror attacks, and other life-threatening situations.
